Which Compression Mode Should You Pick?

Three modes — pick based on what the recipient needs to do with the file.

Recommended — default for scans

Re-encodes page images aggressively. Handwriting and stamps stay readable at screen zoom.

🟡 Less — archival scans

Keep Less for faded ink, pencil, or stamps you may enlarge later.

🔴 Extreme — last resort

Can posterize pencil and pale blue ink. Check a zoomed page before you send.

Before compressing a high-stakes document

Compression rewrites the PDF. BytesPDF rejects files containing a cryptographic signature because any rewrite would invalidate it. Keep digitally signed files and required PDF/A archival masters unchanged. Bookmarks, links, forms, annotations, accessibility tags, and color profiles are preserved where the PDF library can retain them, but always inspect the downloaded copy before filing or submitting it.

Why are scanned PDFs so large?
Each page is a photograph. A 300 DPI letter page is millions of pixels. Ten pages become tens of megabytes even if the “document” is a form.
Will OCR still work after compression?
An existing OCR text layer may remain, but stronger image compression can soften faint text and affect later recognition. BytesPDF does not create or validate OCR.
Phone camera vs flatbed?
Phone scans have more noise and JPEG artifacts; they often shrink more. Flatbed 600 DPI scans shrink a lot but start larger.
Color or grayscale?
Color stamps and highlighter need color. Pure text forms can be grayscale before you PDF them — that is a scan setting, not BytesPDF.
Does this deskew pages?
No. Compression re-encodes images. Crooked pages stay crooked.
Can I compress a 200-page scan on a phone?
Maybe not — memory limits. Use a desktop browser for huge batches.
