Why this page exists: privacy by architecture, not policy

The file is processed locally. BytesPDF does not redact documents, certify compliance, or confirm that a court or opposing party will accept the result.

Legal files often contain privileged correspondence, financial records and identity documents. BytesPDF processes the selected PDF in your browser, so the file is not sent to our servers. This does not replace your firm's confidentiality and filing procedures. Keep the original as the record, compare the compressed copy with it, and confirm the rules of the court or portal before you file.

PDF Compression Core

Recompress supported PDF images locally with an adjustable quality and size trade-off.

Limits

Before You File or Send

Use these checkpoints with the destination's current instructions. Requirements can vary by account, institution, region, document type, and workflow. BytesPDF does not verify or guarantee recipient acceptance. Page reviewed . See the browser-local processing architecture.

Before You File or Send
Portal / RecipientRequirement / check
Court file-size ruleVaries by court: published federal limits range from 3.5 MB to 200 MB. Check your court's rule
Text-searchable pagesBytesPDF does not OCR. A scanned exhibit stays a scan; many courts require searchable PDFs
Encryption and PDF/ACourts often reject encrypted files. BytesPDF does not produce PDF/A
Legibility of exhibits and scansInspect every exhibit, stamp and signature at 100% zoom
Redactions and hidden contentCompression does not redact; remove sensitive content in your document software first
Client record retentionKeep the original file as the record; the compressed copy is a separate download
Trade-offs

Which Compression Mode Should You Pick?

Three modes โ€” pick based on what the recipient needs to do with the file.

โœ… Recommended mode (default)

Suitable for most correspondence and mixed case files. Born-digital text stays text. Scanned exhibits are images and should be checked after processing.

๐ŸŸก Less โ€” for exhibits and evidence

Use Less when images such as photographs, signatures or fine print must stay sharp. Compare the output with the original before sending it to opposing counsel or the court.

๐Ÿ”ด Extreme โ€” only when a hard cap applies

Extreme lowers image resolution for the greatest saving. Do not use it for evidence or signed documents unless a confirmed limit requires it.

Before compressing a high-stakes document

Compression rewrites the PDF. BytesPDF rejects files containing a cryptographic signature because any rewrite would invalidate it. Keep digitally signed files and required PDF/A archival masters unchanged. Bookmarks, links, forms, annotations, accessibility tags, and color profiles are preserved where the PDF library can retain them, but always inspect the downloaded copy before filing or submitting it.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Scenario-specific answers. For general PDF help, see our FAQ.

Is my client's PDF uploaded to BytesPDF?
The selected file is processed in your browser. The file itself is not sent to BytesPDF's servers. BytesPDF records aggregate usage counters after a compression, such as the tool name, file count, sizes and page path, but not the file name or content. Analytics can be switched off in the cookie settings.
Does BytesPDF remove redactions or hidden content?
No. BytesPDF does not redact documents. Text covered by a black box, hidden layers, annotations and attachments may remain in the file. Remove sensitive content in your document software before compressing or merging, and check the output.
Can I compress a password-protected PDF?
Only files that open without a password and allow copying, printing and editing can be processed. Files with owner restrictions are refused, because removing them would bypass the document owner's settings. Ask the sender for an unrestricted copy.
Will compression change the text in a legal document?
Text in born-digital PDFs is kept as text. Scanned pages are images, so their text is only as readable as the image. Compare the search results and small print with the original before relying on the copy.
Does BytesPDF strip metadata from client files?
BytesPDF clears standard descriptive metadata such as author, title and keywords in the output. This is not forensic metadata sanitization. Use your firm's approved sanitization process when a matter requires it.
Is this tool certified for confidentiality or compliance?
No. BytesPDF is a browser-based utility, not a certified legal, e-discovery or compliance product. It does not replace your firm's confidentiality, privilege or data-protection policies.
Will the court accept a compressed filing?
Acceptance depends on the court's current rules and the portal, not on file size alone. Published federal manuals set size limits anywhere from 3.5 MB to 200 MB, so confirm the rule for your court and keep the original as the filed record.
Does BytesPDF make a scanned exhibit text-searchable?
No. BytesPDF does not run OCR. A scanned page stays a scan. Many courts require text-searchable PDFs, so run OCR in your document software first and check the result.
Can I file an encrypted PDF?
Many court systems reject encrypted or password-protected PDFs. BytesPDF's output is unencrypted. Files whose owner has restricted copying, printing or editing are refused, and BytesPDF does not remove those restrictions. Ask the sender for an unrestricted copy.
