Frequently Asked Questions

Honest answers about how BytesPDF works, what it can do, and the limits and checks that still apply.

What is BytesPDF?

BytesPDF is a browser-local tool for compressing one PDF or merging multiple PDFs. Selected PDF content is processed in browser workers and is not uploaded to BytesPDF servers.

Is it free, and what limits apply?

The current core tools cost $0 and add no BytesPDF watermark. Compression accepts one PDF up to 150 MB on desktop or 50 MB on mobile. Merge accepts up to 20 PDFs and 150 MB combined on desktop, or 10 PDFs and 50 MB combined on mobile. Available memory can impose a lower practical limit.

Do I need an account?

No. The core PDF tools work without an account. An account is optional for profile and launch-membership features; it does not move PDF processing to a BytesPDF server.

What happens to a selected PDF after processing?

Working PDF blobs remain in the current tab's memory and are not placed in BytesPDF server storage, IndexedDB, or Cache Storage. Closing the tab releases the working copy. A downloaded result remains wherever you save it.

Does BytesPDF work on phones?

It can run in current mobile browsers, with a 50 MB limit and lower merge file count. Mobile memory, battery, browser version, and PDF complexity can still prevent a particular file from completing.

How is BytesPDF different from server-based PDF tools?

BytesPDF avoids sending selected PDF content to its operator for the current merge and compression tools. Server-based products can offer remote compute and broader features. Use the comparison hub for sourced, product-specific distinctions rather than assuming every web tool behaves alike.

Is other site data shared with service providers?

It can be. Supabase can handle account, subscription, and consent-audit data; Formspree can handle contact submissions; Google Analytics measures traffic unless you opt out (advertising cookies stay off); and Sentry can receive error data when configured. See the privacy policy for the current inventory.

What can I do with BytesPDF today?

You can compress one PDF at a time and merge whole source PDFs in a chosen order. Merge also provides source rotation controls. BytesPDF does not currently provide OCR, conversion, page extraction, font subsetting, or PDF/A validation.

Who maintains the product and content?

BytesPDF is a Global Paradigm product. Zeeshan is identified as the lead engineer and reviewer on technical and comparison content, while the editorial team maintains the guides.

What technology performs the PDF work?

The tools use browser Web Workers, JavaScript PDF libraries, image codecs, WebAssembly where supported, and browser graphics APIs. The exact path varies by operation and file.

Does it work offline?

A connection is needed to load the site and required assets. Once the required code is available in the current session, selected PDF content is processed locally. Do not treat BytesPDF as an installed offline application.

Which browsers work?

Use a current version of a major browser with Web Worker, canvas, and modern JavaScript support. Device memory and feature support vary, so another current browser or a desktop device may help when a file fails.

Is local processing always faster?

No. It avoids PDF upload and download time but uses the local CPU, memory, and battery. A remote service can be faster for some devices or workloads. BytesPDF does not publish a universal speed benchmark.

Will the output open in Acrobat and other readers?

BytesPDF writes standard PDF output intended for modern readers, but PDF structures vary. Inspect the result in a representative viewer before relying on bookmarks, forms, annotations, attachments, accessibility, signatures, or archival behavior.

Does compression reduce quality?

It can. Born-digital vector text is not rasterized by BytesPDF, while scans and photographs are image data and can soften. Start with a moderate mode, keep the original, and inspect the result.

What happens to digital signatures?

Rewriting normally invalidates a cryptographic signature. BytesPDF rejects PDFs with a detected signature ByteRange rather than claiming the signature will survive.

Can BytesPDF process password-protected PDFs?

No. Encrypted or password-protected inputs are rejected. Unlock the document only through an authorized workflow before considering any rewrite.

Does compression create a PDF/A file?

No PDF/A conformance claim is made. Keep an archival master and use an appropriate external validator for standards-controlled output.

Is BytesPDF HIPAA or GDPR certified?

No such certification is claimed, and BytesPDF is not a HIPAA Business Associate. Local processing reduces one transfer path, but compliance depends on the complete workflow, legal role, contracts, access controls, retention, and recipients.

What should I try if a large file fails?

Close unused tabs and applications, try a current desktop browser, and confirm the file is within the published limit. A complex PDF can still exceed available memory below the nominal cap. Keep the original and avoid repeated rewrites of an important document.
