Compress PDFs for Mobile Sharing — WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage

A smaller copy can reduce transfer time and recipient storage use, but the result and send time vary by PDF, network, app, and device.

The messaging service receives the attachment you send. BytesPDF processes the selected copy in the phone browser without uploading PDF content to BytesPDF servers.

Selected PDF Content Stays LocalUses This Device

Mobile transfer time varies with signal, congestion, app behavior, device, and recipient storage. A smaller distribution copy can help, but there is no universal send-time estimate. Confirm the app's current document rules, keep the original, and check what the recipient actually receives.

Mobile Sharing Checks

Use these checkpoints with the destination's current instructions. Requirements can vary by account, institution, region, document type, and workflow. BytesPDF does not verify or guarantee recipient acceptance. Page reviewed . See the browser-local processing architecture.

Which Compression Mode Should You Pick?

Three modes — pick based on what the recipient needs to do with the file.

Recommended — everyday chats

Can reduce supported image data; actual output size and transfer time vary by PDF, app, network, and device.

🟡 Less — when they will print

If the recipient will print a contract or form, Less keeps stamps readable.

🔴 Extreme — weak cellular only

Use Extreme only when a confirmed size constraint remains after a moderate attempt. Check small print and scans afterward.

Before compressing a high-stakes document

Compression rewrites the PDF. BytesPDF rejects files containing a cryptographic signature because any rewrite would invalidate it. Keep digitally signed files and required PDF/A archival masters unchanged. Bookmarks, links, forms, annotations, accessibility tags, and color profiles are preserved where the PDF library can retain them, but always inspect the downloaded copy before filing or submitting it.

PDF Compression Core

Recompress supported PDF images locally with an adjustable quality and size trade-off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Scenario-specific answers. For general PDF help, see our FAQ.

Why compress when a messaging app already accepts the PDF?
A smaller copy can reduce transfer time and recipient storage use, but there is no universal speed or output-size estimate. The app may also treat documents differently from media.
Does WhatsApp recompress my PDF?
Documents usually pass through as files. Images in the chat bubble are recompressed; a PDF attachment is not re-encoded the same way.
Is it private to compress before sending?
Selected PDF content is not uploaded to BytesPDF. The messaging service still receives what you send; local processing removes only the compression-service transfer.
iMessage failed with a large PDF. What now?
Delivery behavior can vary between internet messaging, carrier messaging, nearby transfer, and links. Check the current method and access controls instead of targeting a universal size.
Can I compress on my phone’s browser?
Yes on modern Safari and Chrome. Very large files may hit mobile memory limits — try one file at a time.
Telegram is 2 GB. Still compress?
Only if the other person is on cellular or you will email the same file later.
