Why Is My PDF So Large?
Diagnostic: select a word. If you cannot, you are holding photographs. If you can, hunt the header image and the unused font.
File size is a symptom. The causes cluster: page images at camera resolution, PowerPoint textures, duplicate font subsets, and the occasional embedded file. Use the table as a prior. Then run Recommended mode. If the file barely moves, it was already mostly text.
Typical Size Drivers
Use these checkpoints with the destination's current instructions. Requirements can vary by account, institution, region, document type, and workflow. BytesPDF does not verify or guarantee recipient acceptance. Page reviewed . See the browser-local processing architecture.
| Portal / Recipient | Requirement / check |
|---|---|
| Full-page 300 DPI color scan | ~2–8 MB / page |
| Phone camera “scan” JPEG in a PDF | ~1–6 MB / page |
| Born-digital text + fonts | often < 500 KB |
| Embedded video or huge ICC profiles | can dwarf the text |
| Unoptimized PowerPoint export | 10–80 MB typical |
Which Compression Mode Should You Pick?
Three modes — pick based on what the recipient needs to do with the file.
✅ Images are the suspect
If pages look like photos, Recommended mode is the right first experiment.
🟡 Text-only and still huge
Look for embedded font subsets duplicated per page, or a hidden full-page background image.
🔴 Password or attachments
Encrypted PDFs cannot be processed here. Embedded file attachments add size BytesPDF may not strip.
Before compressing a high-stakes document
Compression rewrites the PDF. BytesPDF rejects files containing a cryptographic signature because any rewrite would invalidate it. Keep digitally signed files and required PDF/A archival masters unchanged. Bookmarks, links, forms, annotations, accessibility tags, and color profiles are preserved where the PDF library can retain them, but always inspect the downloaded copy before filing or submitting it.
