How do I properly redact text in a PDF?

Proper redaction destroys the text, not just its appearance. Drawing a black rectangle over words leaves them in the file — anyone can copy-paste or search them out. Here, every page with a selected match is rebuilt as an image with the match painted out at render time: the underlying text object no longer exists in the copy.

Is drawing a black box over text in a PDF safe?

Almost never. Unless the box is burnt into an image, the words under it stay extractable — this is one of the most common redaction failures in leaked documents. The pre-send checker can detect text sitting under black boxes; this tool removes the text instead.

How is the redaction verified?

After rebuilding, the output's text layer is scanned again for every redacted term. Each term reports its remaining count — the honest expected number is zero. You see the verification result before you download.

What happens to the redacted pages?

They become images (that is what makes the removal irreversible), so they lose selectable text. Pages without matches are copied untouched and stay fully searchable. The trade-off is stated before you run it.

Can it redact scanned documents?

It redacts text that exists as text. In a pure scan, words are pixels — a black box drawn on the scan is already irreversible for every tool and reader. For born-digital documents (and OCR'd scans with a text layer), this tool removes the actual text.
