Why this page exists: privacy by architecture, not policy

Court PDFs can contain privilege, medical exhibits, financial data, and party identifiers. BytesPDF avoids receiving the selected PDF, but firm controls, the device, downloads, and the court filing system still matter.

If an e-file portal reports a size error, confirm the court's current rules before changing the document. A filing can contain work product, discovery, sealed material, personal data, or exhibits with fine detail. BytesPDF processes a selected copy in the browser. Born-digital text is not deliberately rasterized, while supported images may be re-encoded. Keep the filing master and validate Bates labels, citations, signatures, exhibits, and page order before filing.

Which Compression Mode Should You Pick?

Three modes — pick based on what the recipient needs to do with the file.

✅ Recommended — default for exhibits

Born-digital Bates stamps, page numbers, and labels remain vector text. Scanned stamps are pixels and must be checked against the original after compression.

🟡 Less — for photographic exhibits

Use Less when photographs, medical imaging, or crime-scene scans must remain inspectable at zoom. Slightly larger file; safer for the record.

🔴 Avoid Extreme on stamped records

Extreme can soften small Bates numbers, stamps, and handwritten annotations. Use it only when a confirmed court rule remains unmet, then inspect every affected page.

Before compressing a high-stakes document

Compression rewrites the PDF. BytesPDF rejects files containing a cryptographic signature because any rewrite would invalidate it. Keep digitally signed files and required PDF/A archival masters unchanged. Bookmarks, links, forms, annotations, accessibility tags, and color profiles are preserved where the PDF library can retain them, but always inspect the downloaded copy before filing or submitting it.

Will PACER reject a compressed PDF?
Court acceptance depends on local rules, PDF validity, searchable-text requirements, signatures, and sometimes PDF/A—not size alone. Keep the original, confirm the clerk’s current rule, and inspect the downloaded copy before filing.
Are Bates stamps preserved?
Yes when stamps are real text or vector overlays. Recommended mode does not rasterize the page. If stamps were burned into a low-DPI scan, use Less mode so digits stay sharp.
Is attorney–client privilege safer here than on a cloud compressor?
Selected PDF content is processed in the browser and is not uploaded to BytesPDF. That avoids adding a compression-service recipient but does not replace the firm’s privilege, device, access, retention, and filing controls.
Does compression break bookmarks or hyperlinks?
The compression path avoids deliberately deleting bookmarks, links, forms, and annotations, but PDF structures vary. Test every bookmark, hyperlink, Bates label, and exhibit reference in the downloaded copy before filing.
What about sealed or in-camera exhibits?
Follow the court and firm’s approved process for sealed exhibits. If local compression is permitted, file only through the designated sealed workflow and close the tab when finished.
Can I compress a multi-exhibit appendix?
Yes. Merge exhibits first if your court wants a single PDF, then compress. Some courts prefer separate PDFs per exhibit — compress each file individually in that case.
Will digital signatures on affidavits survive?
Any rewrite invalidates a cryptographic signature. BytesPDF therefore rejects digitally signed PDFs. File the original signed declaration; compress only unsigned drafts or scans of wet-ink copies, then inspect the output.
Does Extreme mode make clerk OCR fail?
Stronger image compression can impair faint or low-resolution scans and later OCR. Start moderately and inspect the actual clerk and print workflow; no preset guarantees acceptance.
