Why this page exists: privacy by architecture, not policy

Selected PDF content is not uploaded to BytesPDF servers. That reduces one transfer path but does not remove device, browser, authorization, access-control, retention, or recipient obligations.

Medical PDFs can combine born-digital reports, full-page scans, handwriting, insurance forms, and images. Those elements do not respond to compression in the same way. Keep the original record unchanged. Confirm the destination's current instructions, compress a separate copy only if permitted, and compare diagnoses, doses, lab values, ranges, names, dates, and signatures before sending.

HIPAA position โ€” read before compressing medical records

BytesPDF is not a Business Associate under HIPAA. We don't access, store, or transmit your Protected Health Information (PHI). All processing happens in your browser โ€” our servers see neither your file nor its content.

What this means for you: BytesPDF removes one path through which PHI would otherwise flow (a third-party compression server). It does not exempt you from maintaining Business Associate Agreements with the portals and providers thatdo receive your PHI downstream.

For a deeper explanation of our privacy architecture and the limits of what we can and cannot guarantee, see How It Works and Privacy Policy.

Medical Record Submission Checks

Use these checkpoints with the destination's current instructions. Requirements can vary by account, institution, region, document type, and workflow. BytesPDF does not verify or guarantee recipient acceptance. Page reviewed . See the browser-local processing architecture.

Which Compression Mode Should You Pick?

Three modes โ€” pick based on what the recipient needs to do with the file.

โœ… Recommended โ€” mixed records

Start moderately for reports containing text and scans. Compare every clinically important value with the original.

๐ŸŸก Less โ€” fine clinical detail

Prefer a smaller visual change for handwriting, fine charts, print, or detailed medical imagery. Do not treat this as a diagnostic-image workflow.

๐Ÿ”ด Do not rewrite signed records

BytesPDF rejects detected cryptographically signed PDFs. Keep signed authorizations and standards-controlled masters unchanged.

Before compressing a high-stakes document

Compression rewrites the PDF. BytesPDF rejects files containing a cryptographic signature because any rewrite would invalidate it. Keep digitally signed files and required PDF/A archival masters unchanged. Bookmarks, links, forms, annotations, accessibility tags, and color profiles are preserved where the PDF library can retain them, but always inspect the downloaded copy before filing or submitting it.

PDF Compression Core

Recompress supported PDF images locally with an adjustable quality and size trade-off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Scenario-specific answers. For general PDF help, see our FAQ.

Does local compression make a workflow HIPAA-compliant?
No. BytesPDF is not a covered entity or Business Associate and offers no BAA. Local PDF processing removes one document-transfer path, but compliance depends on authorization, access controls, contracts, retention, the device, and the downstream recipient.
Will lab values and medication doses remain readable?
Born-digital text is not deliberately rasterized, but scanned values and handwriting are pixels and can soften. Compare every clinically important field with the original before sharing.
Does compression remove PHI metadata?
BytesPDF clears common descriptive and XMP fields. It is not a forensic sanitizer and does not promise removal of every image value, annotation, attachment, hidden object, revision, or application-specific field.
Can I compress a signed consent form?
Do not rewrite a cryptographically signed PDF. BytesPDF rejects files with a detected signature ByteRange because rewriting would invalidate the signature. A scan of wet ink is an image and must be checked visually if a copy is compressed.
Will a patient or insurance portal accept the result?
Acceptance cannot be guaranteed. The portal may check size, format, page count, account settings, malware, signatures, and legibility. Follow its current instructions and retain the original.
