How to Combine PDF Files on Mac: Preview and Browser Workflows

To combine PDFs on Mac in Preview, work on duplicates, display View > Thumbnails in each document, and drag the pages you want into the destination document's thumbnail sidebar. Apple also documents dragging a PDF's Finder icon into an open document's sidebar to add an entire file. Crucially, Apple warns that Preview saves changes automatically: duplicate originals before assembling the packet. 1

Combine PDFs with Preview thumbnails

The following native workflow follows Apple's Preview guide, checked September 27, 2026. Consult its macOS version selector if your menus differ. 1

1. Open the PDFs in Preview and use File > Duplicate to protect your source documents before combining them.
2. In each open PDF, choose View > Thumbnails so you can see the page sidebar.
3. Select the thumbnails you want to add. Apple documents Command-click for pages that are not next to one another.
4. Drag the selected thumbnails from the source sidebar into the destination sidebar, at the intended position.
5. Reorder thumbnails if needed. To add a complete PDF, Apple's alternative is to drag its Finder icon into the destination's sidebar.
6. Locate and reopen the combined copy. Check the filename, page count and the join between every source document before sending it.

The last verification step is a publishing check, not evidence that every PDF feature survived. A packet can look correct while a form, bookmark, attachment or link has changed.

Merge whole PDFs in a Mac browser

Use this route when every source file belongs in the packet in full.

1. Open Merge PDF in a current supported browser.
2. Add your PDFs. Desktop sessions allow up to 20 files and 150 MB combined; mobile sessions allow 10 files and 50 MB combined. Available memory can impose a lower practical limit.
3. Arrange the files in the intended order. Review the list after any sort; a filename sort is not necessarily the logical order of a contract or application.
4. Use rotation controls if an entire source is sideways. This does not rearrange individual pages within a source.
5. Merge, download a separate combined PDF and reopen that download.

The merger copies pages into a new PDF. It does not promise to retain all document-level bookmarks, forms, annotations, attachments or source metadata. Encrypted inputs must first be opened and saved as authorized unencrypted copies in another application; this merger is not a password-recovery tool.

Avoid the three common assembly mistakes

The wrong pages or files landed in the packet

Inspect the boundary between every source: the previous document's last page and the next one's first page. Confirm that no cover page was added twice and no appendix disappeared. For whole-file merging, the expected total is the sum of source page counts; for selected-page assembly, count the pages you actually selected.

A page is sideways or a different size

Orientation and page dimensions are separate. Rotating a page does not necessarily make it the same size as its neighbors. Use the mixed-page-size guide and review the saved output's intended print setup rather than relying only on thumbnail proportions.

The result is larger than the upload limit

Finalize the packet before producing a smaller distribution copy. Merge, then compress explains why repeated edits and recompression are a poor substitute for a final-file check. If the recipient gives a specific cap, use target-size compression and inspect readability; a requested ceiling is not a guarantee that the document will fit.

Verify the exact file you are sending

Check page count, source boundaries, orientation, legibility and blank pages. Test search, copying, bookmarks, links and form fields if the recipient relies on them. Verify that the attachment or upload is the new combined file, not an earlier version still open in another window.

Combining files is not redaction, metadata anonymization or encryption. If the workflow needs another operation, do it deliberately and recheck the final output. Never rewrite a digitally signed original on the assumption that its cryptographic signature will survive.
