Does PDF Compression Affect Text Quality?

Direct answer

It depends on how the text is stored. Born-digital text usually remains vector text and stays sharp. Text on a scanned page is made of pixels and can blur when the page image is downsampled.

Why this happens

Try selecting a word. If selection works, the PDF probably contains a real text layer. If it does not, the letters may only exist inside a photograph or scan.

Some scanned PDFs contain both a page image and an invisible OCR text layer. Search may continue to work while the visible letters soften because the image and text layer are separate.

Do not rely on a general “text preserved” badge for a high-stakes scan. Inspect the actual output and, when relevant, test the recipient's OCR or extraction workflow.

Text checks

  • Select and copy a sentence before and after compression.
  • Search for a known account number or phrase.
  • Zoom into decimal points, punctuation, and thin characters.
  • Use Less mode for faint, handwritten, or low-DPI source pages.

What BytesPDF does

BytesPDF re-encodes supported image streams rather than rasterizing full pages. Existing vector text remains text, but image-based text follows the selected image quality setting.
