Will a Compressed PDF Still Be Searchable?
Direct answer
Usually yes when the original contains born-digital text or an OCR text layer and the compressor preserves that structure. Compression does not create searchability for an image-only scan.
Why this happens
Searchability comes from text objects, not from the visible appearance alone. A page can look like a scan but still contain invisible OCR text positioned behind the image.
Image recompression can leave that text layer intact. However, unusual PDFs, damaged structures, or a workflow that deliberately flattens pages may behave differently.
Test search in the same class of viewer the recipient will use. Copying a sentence is an additional check that the text layer maps to useful characters.
Verify searchability
- Search for a distinctive phrase in the output.
- Select and copy text into a plain-text editor.
- Check every language and script used in the document.
- Keep the original if accessibility or discovery obligations apply.
What BytesPDF does
BytesPDF does not flatten pages and is designed to keep existing text objects. It does not add OCR to image-only files, and complex outputs should still be tested.
