Why Won't My PDF Upload Even Though It Is Under the Size Limit?

Direct answer

File size is only one validation rule. The portal may reject encryption, signatures, malformed PDFs, unsupported versions, page dimensions, filenames, malware-scan results, network timeouts, or account-specific requirements.

Why this happens

A displayed limit may be decimal MB while your operating system reports binary MiB, or the portal may calculate encoded request size rather than raw file bytes. Some instructions also apply a combined limit across several attachments.

Generic “invalid file” messages can hide corruption, password protection, unsupported forms, or a temporary server problem. Compression cannot fix every validation error.

Use the portal's exact help text and test the original in a trusted PDF viewer before changing the document repeatedly.

Upload troubleshooting

  • Confirm raw byte size and whether the limit is per file or combined.
  • Use a simple filename without unusual symbols when the portal requires it.
  • Check encryption, digital signatures, and PDF/A requirements.
  • Try the portal's supported browser or contact its help desk for the rejection code.

What BytesPDF does

BytesPDF can reduce supported image data, but it cannot guarantee portal acceptance. It rejects encrypted and digitally signed files and advises keeping high-stakes originals.
